1993

After spending a week on Amorgós, I embarked a little boat, Skopelitis, to go to Náxos. This little boat passes a chain of small islands, Konfoníssi, Shinoússa, Iráklia and a couple of others, before reaching Náxos (or Amorgós).

On Naxos there are many picturesque and interesting villages and places to visit. So you do miss out if you only spend time on your favourite beach during your stay on Naxos. Many of the villages are situated in the mountains with spectacular scenery. I will in this article describe some of these places I have been to and will add more later.

Náxos town

Accommodation can be found in Chora and many other villages on Naxos. The years I have been staying in Náxos Town, have mostly been close to the Castle area. Easter 2006 I had the opportunity to experience the hospitably at Sofi Pension! It is run by the friendly Koufopoulos family. Their hospitality makes you feel welcome and give you a desire to return next year!

  • Náxos town - Chora

In Chora there are a lot of restaurants and taverns everywhere, and because of this there is a risk of getting an uninspiring meal. In the touristy places it is often more focus on quantity rather the quality, and they don’t worry that much about using good quality supply for their cooking. But luckily enough there are exceptions from the general rule. I will add them here as soon as I come across them

Quality food shopping

Local food products as well as biological farming products can be found in a few shops in Naxos town. I am concerned how food is produced and personally favours the above food production methods. Locally produced food also often taste better, since it is fresher because of the short and fast distribution from the farm to the consumer.

On Naxos art and handicraft can be found in several shops and galleries. I would like to mention a few who showcase interesting art/handicraft and production methods.

The potteries by Emilia Giannarou and Konstantinos Nitsakos (Ε. ΓΙΑΝΝΑΡΟΥ, Κ. ΝΙΤΣΑΚΟΣ), is found in their workshop in Agios Prokopios, just outside Chora.

The beaches of Náxos are excellent, must of them South west of town. Actually, the entire coastline consists of beautiful beaches, reachable by bus or kaíki.
