Greece, Fyrom make haste slowly
UN MEDIATOR Matthew Nimetz appeared hopeful of settling the issue of the name of Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (Fyrom) after talks in Athens and Skopje, but he indicated that any solution will likely come after the June 1 Fyrom general elections.

Greece's suspension from Kyoto
On April 17, the United Nations suspended Greece for three months from the emissions-trading scheme formed under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The unprecedented suspension, punishment for inaccurate reporting of carbon emissions, combines two of Greece's international hallmarks: lack of transparency in reporting and an apparently complete lack of concern for the environment.

GREECE on April 23 renewed its ban on genetically modified maize produced by US biotech giant Monsanto Co, expanding it to include 70 types of seed.

Greeks block airline flight over use of the name Macedonia
What’s in a name? A lot apparently, judging by Greece's move to block a Macedonian Air Transport plane from using its airspace. Macedonian Air is the national carrier for Macedonia, one of the now-independent nations that had made up Yugoslavia. The Associated Press notes Greece and Macedonia "have been arguing for many years over the name Macedonia."
